The Short Answer
Most local moves in the Dallas-Fort Worth area cost between $500 and $1,200 depending on the size of your home, how far you're going, and how much stuff you have.
At Bin on the Move, our rate is $250 per hour with a crew of 3 movers included. The average move takes about 3 hours, putting most clients around $750.
What Affects the Price
Home size
A one-bedroom apartment is going to be faster than a 4-bedroom house. More rooms means more stuff, more time, and more cost.
Distance
A move across town is different from a move across the metroplex. DFW is massive -- a move from downtown Dallas to McKinney is 40+ miles. That adds time.
Stairs and elevators
Third-floor walkup? That adds time. If there's an elevator, it helps, but you might need to reserve it with your building.
Large or specialty items
Pianos, gun safes, pool tables -- these take extra time and care. Let your movers know ahead of time so they can plan.
Time of year
Spring and summer are peak moving season. If you have flexibility, booking in fall or winter can sometimes mean more availability and faster scheduling.
What's Usually Included
A good moving company should include:
- A crew (typically 2-3 movers for most homes)
- The truck
- Basic protection for your belongings
- Loading and unloading
At Bin on the Move, we also include reusable moving bins with every move at no extra charge. That means you don't need to buy cardboard boxes, and you have a much cleaner packing and unpacking experience.
What's Usually Extra
Watch out for these potential add-ons with other companies:
- Packing materials (boxes, tape, bubble wrap)
- Long carry fees (if the truck can't park close)
- Stair fees
- Fuel surcharges
- Minimum hour requirements
We keep it simple. $250/hr, bins included, no hidden fees.
How to Get an Accurate Estimate
The best way to get a real number is to tell your moving company:
- Your current address and new address
- How many bedrooms
- Any large or unusual items
- Whether there are stairs or elevators
- Your preferred move date
This gives them everything they need to give you a real estimate, not a lowball number that doubles on moving day.
Tips to Keep Costs Down
- Declutter before you move. Less stuff = less time = lower cost.
- Pack ahead of time. If everything is boxed up and ready when the crew arrives, you save hours.
- Be flexible on dates. Weekday moves are often easier to schedule.
- Label your boxes by room. This speeds up unloading significantly.
